Q: I have a few that are so called 'toned' pennies. Can you tell me what are toned coins and how much are they worth?

A: Toned coins come in different varieties. All toned coins are created from a reaction that the metal of the coins have with oxygen or chemicals. Depending on the situation coins become either colorful or dark. Dark toning devalues a coin and colorful toning can increase the value depending on the location, intensity and the rarity of the coin itself.

Q: I have a lot of wheat pennies. Are they worth anything? I have several real old ones, but they are worn down quite a bit. The dates are mostly from the 1940's and 1950's. None in mint condition.

A: For those date ranges they are all common. Except for a mint error such as the 1955 Double Die Obverse Cent. Besides that, we sell bags of mixed wheat pennies for just barely over the face value.

Q: I have a couple of 'silver' pennies that are dated 1942 (I believe). Do they have any worth? Thank you!

A: Thanks for your question! Your ‘silver’ pennies are actually steel pennies. They made the steel penny in 1943. They were made so the US could use the copper normally used for the penny could be used for military purposes. Despite the interesting situation surrounding the steel cent it is a common coin. Circulated examples go for $0.05 - $0.50 depending on condition and uncirculated ones going for just a little more.
