LAS VEGAS -- Motorists can skip costly fines if they refrain from driving distracted and post their experience on social media or other means through the “IT CAN WAIT FOR 28 CHALLENGE,” which kicks off Monday, June 30.

Through July 10, the Nevada Department of Public Safety, Office of Traffic Safety will team up with the Nevada Highway Patrol Southern Command and Clark County Justice Court to dismiss citations issued to motorists driving while using handheld electronic devices – but only once violators complete 28 consecutive daily activities posted online within the pilot program’s It Can Wait for 28 website.

Drivers who register for the challenge and fail to complete the activities will have their citations processed immediately.

The purpose of the challenge is to help participants learn to break dangerous distracted driving habits, including conditioned responses to ring tones and visual phone cues. The Challenge reflects on the commonly held perception that it takes 28 days to overcome a bad habit.

Nevada’s hands-free electronic device law went into effect Jan. 1, 2012. Still, law enforcement officers respond to more than 3,500 distracted driving-related crashes every year.

More information about distracted driving, including facts and statistics, is available on the Zero Fatalities Nevada program website.
