LAS VEGAS (KSNV MyNews3) -- It's that time of year to think about rolling up your sleeve for a flu shot. But why do you need it, and what will it protect you from?

New this year are shots offering protection against a greater number of flu virus strains.

Vaccines have traditionally protected against three kinds of viruses. This year a Quadrivalent vaccine protects against a 4th strain of the virus. Also new is a vaccine available to people with severe allergies to eggs, which are typically used in flu vaccinations. For those afraid of needles, there is a nasal spray vaccination available this year.

According to the center for disease control and prevention, the flu is associated with as many at 49,000 deaths each year across the country and more than 200,000 hospitalizations. The most severe cases are found in infants, children and people over the age of 65.
Some of the symptoms of the flu include high fever, headaches, extreme fatigue and chest discomfort. Everyone 6 months old or older is urged to get vaccinated as the only way to protect against the flu.

The Southern Nevada Health District is offering flu shots starting Monday for about $40 per shot, available at local drug stores and clinics around town.
