LAS VEGAS (KSNV MyNews3) -- This weekend, the nation will mark a very important anniversary: the day Martin Luther King Jr. delivered his famous “I have a dream” speech in Washington. In Las Vegas, locals are busy preparing for a celebration here in town that will coincide with other national events.

King’s iconic words were spoken 50 years ago this week, and yet, for many, they still resonate today. On Saturday Las Vegans, along with the rest of the nation, will celebrate the anniversary of the famous march on Washington, led by none other than the late Reverend Martin Luther King Jr.

“I would like for people to recognize that he was an American fighting for American ways,” said Rodney Smith, an organizer for the 50-year anniversary march in Vegas. “The American ways that were put forth in the constitution of the United States of America.”

Symbolic march re-enactments are planned for both the nation’s capital and Las Vegas. Locally, hundreds are expected to turn out Saturday Morning at the MLK statue and pavilion
Radio executive Craig Knight is helping spread the word.

“To me, it’s far beyond civil rights. It’s actually human rights,” Knight said. “And when you look at it from a perspective of human rights, that includes everyone.”
March organizer Rodney Smith believes that events like these are critical for passing on Dr. King’s legacy to future generations.

“Diversity really has been the strength of this country,” Smith said. “So this is an opportunity for us to celebrate our diversity, and also the achievements of the man whose shoulders many of us stand on.”

The local march starts at 8:00 a.m. this Saturday at Doolittle park, and ends at the statue at the MLK Pavilion.
