LAS VEGAS (KSVN & MyNews3) -- Dinner may be a few hours away but for 1 out of 4 valley children, there may be no dinner at all.
That's according to Three Square. The valley's food bank just unveiled their annual hunger by zip code map. Marie Mortera has more information.
The hungriest residents live in zip code 89101 which is outside of downtown Las Vegas.
The zip code 89044 -- which borders upscale communities like Anthem, hunger is at about 20-percent.
The take away here is: Do you know how hungry your neighborhood is?
Brian Burton, president and CEO of Three Square says it may be hard to imagine a Costco sized warehouse, emptied of food but when you look at their latest study you'll see hunger everywhere.
Yes, near the shelters in downtown Las Vegas, but also in the suburbs in the west and south.
“When you think about a place as affluent as ours - one out of 6 people, one out of 4 kids that struggle with hunger and then to see how close it is to where you live, it makes it real, very understandable,” Burton said.
It's a guide to see where is the greatest need. One interesting find is by tracking foreclosures, you track food insecurity.
“These dark areas are where there is food insecurity so there is direct relationship between the housing crisis and the food insecure. Sometimes we call them the SUV poor because they were middle class during the good times but now there's no food, no jobs and they're literally standing in in line in a food pantry.”
