LAS VEGAS (KSNV & MyNews3) -- Closing national parks is also putting a big race in jeopardy.

The National Nurses Conference in Las Vegas includes a half marathon and 5K run that was supposed to stretch around the scenic loop at Red Rock.

People are coming from all over the world for the event and to support the four-time cancer survivor who put it all together.

Luckily they have been working on a Plan B to keep the race on instead of canceling it.

It only takes strangers a few minutes to realize how special Helene Neville is.

This four time cancer survivor was first diagnosed in 1992.

“In 1998 when they said to get my affairs in order I went home and signed up for the Chicago Marathon,” Neville said. “I’m still running from that diagnosis.”

In 2010 she left Ocean Beach, Calif., and ran to Atlantic Beach, Fla. The 2,500 miles took 93 days and she stopped to visit hospitals along the way.

Dollie Kurtz was so inspired her company sponsored Neville and traveled to the end.

“I was at her finish line at the Tijuana border,” Kurtz said. “It was an inspiring and emotional time.”

Now Neville is planning a race herself in one of the prettiest places in her hometown.

“I came to red rock after my chemo treatments. I wanted to naturally have the run here,” she said.

The only problem is, the park is closed because of the government shutdown.

Instead of jogging inside the scenic loop, the national nurses half marathon and 5K will travel east towards The Strip and run past the spectacular views of Red Rock from the road.

Neville says she's disappointed, but feel lucky to have such a great Plan B.
