PAHRUMP (John Treanor, KSNV MyNews3.com) -- Mandatory evacuation orders are in effect for the Trout Canyon and Kyle Canyon communities in response to the Carpenter Canyon fire in the Spring Mountain range.
Sources at the Mount Charleston lodge can see heavy smoke and flames behind Cathedral Rock. Nevada Highway Patrol has closed off State Route 157.
The American Red Cross says an evacuation center will be opened at Hafen Elementary School, 7120 S. Hafen Ranch Road, Pahrump. Shelter team members are en route to stand up the operation. If the evacuation continues into the night, the evacuation will become a shelter for residents. A second station for Kyle Canyon evacuees has been established by the Red Cross at Bilbray Elementary, 9370 Brent Lane, Las Vegas.
The Bureau of Land Management has set up a public information number at (702) 515-5105.
Earlier today, a thunderstorm in the area forced the cancellation of a controlled burn attempt.
Fire officials said there was dry lightning in the area because of the storm. Dry lightning was cited as the cause of the 1,200-acre fire that started around noon Monday.
Fire officials say airdrops will continue to battle the blaze, but if the winds increase to 45 mph, they will be forced to cancel that effort.
Type II firefighters are set to take over operations at 6 p.m.
