LAS VEGAS (KSNV -- An 87-year-old man was killed Monday morning when he lost control of his car and hit a large decorative boulder in the parking lot of a strip mall on the east side of the valley.

The accident may have been the result of a medical episode, according to Metro.

Metro said the accident happened just before 8:15 a.m. on South Sandhill Road just north of East Desert Inn Road.

A witness statement and evidence at the scene, indicate a 2010 Toyota Camry was northbound on Sandhill Road when it failed to stop for the red traffic signal at Desert Inn Road.

The Toyota crossed over Desert Inn, where it struck the median and then veered into the southbound travel lanes. The Toyota entered into the parking lot of the Desert Inn Plaza, struck a large decorative boulder and came to rest.

The driver was transported to Desert Springs Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

The collision remains under investigation by Metro.
