MOAPA VALLEY – More than 2,200 Boy Scouts from the Las Vegas area traveled to the Moapa Indian Reservation and back in time Saturday to participate in the 31st annual Mountain Man Rendezvous.

This popular event hearkens back to the fur trapping days of the 19th century, when explorers and adventurers charted new territory and encountered native peoples.

“The Mountain Man Rendezvous is an important cultural event in the lives of our Scouts. They are able to connect with history and understand the American West in greater context. It is easier to appreciate modern conveniences once you experience how the early explorers lived,” said Las Vegas Councilman Steve Ross, the event organizer.

Activities include black powder shooting, knife and ax throws, woodcarving, panning for gold, archery and a Muddy River run.

Many event organizers and participants dress in period costumes to enhance the experience for Las Vegas youths.
