Justice Dept. gives Nevada tribes $1.8M in grants

LAS VEGAS – Two Nevada Indian tribes will receive more than $1.8 million in U.S. Department of Justice grants to assist them enhance law enforcement practices and sustain crime prevention and intervention efforts.

Nevada tribes receiving awards are the Pyramid Lake Paiute Tribe and the Washoe Tribe of Nevada and California. Each of these tribes received a grant for public safety and community policing and for the violence against women tribal governments program.

The Nevada tribes were included in an announcement made Wednesday by the U.S. Department of Justice as part of its ongoing initiative to increase engagement, coordination and action on public safety in tribal communities. The announcement stated that 192 grants totaling more than $90 million were made to more than 110 American Indian and Alaska Native nations.

“I am very pleased that Nevada tribes have received this much needed financial assistance from the Department of Justice,” said U.S. Attorney Daniel G. Bogden.

“Over the last several years, representatives from my office, federal law enforcement, and I have visited and consulted with all of our Nevada tribes concerning the law enforcement and safety issues they face on their tribal lands. It has brought a better understanding of how we can better serve and support our tribal partners.”

The awards are made through the department’s Coordinated Tribal Assistance Solicitation, a single application for tribal-specific grant programs.
