CARSON CITY (KSNV & MyNews3) -- Time ran out at midnight last night before state lawmakers could pass a bill to raise money for more cops in southern Nevada.

Governor Brian Sandoval then sent them into overtime to try again.

For the 27th time in Nevada history the legislature needed a Special Session to finish work they didn't get done in the regular 120-day session.

News 3's Jim Snyder was there to watch the scramble that fell short when the clock struck midnight and the see the overtime that started early this morning.

Once lawmakers got back to work they moved quickly.

They passed five bills through the senate and assembly in less than two hours. A pace they were never able to reach during the 120 days of the regular session.

The biggest of those bills, the one nicknamed 'more cops' authorizes the Clark County Commission to raise the sales tax by .15 percent to raise money for Metro and other southern Nevada police departments.

They almost pulled off a buzzer beater last night. Everyone was watching the final seconds tick down to midnight, as the assembly was trying to rush a vote on the ‘more cops' bill.

They just missed the deadline and the governor decided to use his power to give them another shot.
