NORTH LAS VEGAS (KSNV & MyNews3) -- A battle rages on in North Las Vegas. Today police and firefighters are taking the city to court over efforts to suspend union contracts.

News 3's Denise Rosch has the latest on the on-going saga.

It's a fight pitting public safety employees against their own city.

The unions representing police officers and firefighters in North Las Vegas are going to court over negotiated contracts.

At issue is a city resolution that suspended benefits in the wake of a financial crisis. Something attorneys for the unions say is flat-out wrong.

“They claimed financial emergency to break a contract, Nevada law clearly prevents that so were asking the judge to throw out the resolution and allow us to go forward with the contract,” said attorney Richard Segerblom, representing NLV Police Supervisors Association.

For nearly two hours Tuesday Judge Susan Johnson listened to arguments.

On the one side is city representatives who say North Las Vegas is in such bad financial shape leaders had to lay off police and firefighters, or suspend the contracts.

The unions say there's another problem with the city crying poor. City leaders they say are still paying for big ticket items like Craig Ranch Park, set up to open later this month at a cost of $130 million.
