LAS VEGAS (KSNV MyNews3) -- Today, more than 300,000 thousand kids attended the first day of the new school year for Clark County, but that wasn't the day’s only first. It was also the first day for a language-based pilot program in Nevada.

Parents dropped off their kids at Cambeiro Elementary today -- many of whom speak a language other than English.

96 percent of the County’s English language learners go to Cambeiro Elementary, which is one of the 14 schools in Clark County now designated as a zoom school to get extra funding for language programs.

Superintendant Pat Skorkowsky and State Senator Michael Roberson toured Cambeiro.

“For the first time we are funding English language learner programs at the state level,” Roberson said. “It’s a historic change. $50,000,000 is going into primarily Southern Nevada school to help these kids.”

"We are focusing in on an area that really needs our assistance, and that is working with the second-language population: our students that have barriers because of the non-English-speaking opportunities that they have not been able to get,” Skorkowsky said.

Zoom schools have smaller class sizes, free summer school offerings, and reading centers.
