LAS VEGAS (KSNV MyNews3) -- Family and friends of a young boy killed in a fire are trying to come to terms with the tragedy.

Las Vegas Fire & Rescue says the children were playing with matches Thursday afternoon, and that's what started the fire in the 2300 block of Howard Drive, near Fremont and Eastern.

There is a small memorial outside the boys’ home with photos of the brothers. Next door is the scene of the fire. Officials say a group of boys who lived in the neighborhood were playing with matches and setting off fireworks inside of a vacant home.

This afternoon the Clark County coroner identified the young boy who died in the fire as 7-year-old Jacob West of Las Vegas.

At some point they went into a workshop attached to the carport and started lighting small items on fire.

Investigators say the boys tried to douse the flames with an unknown liquid which caused the fire to flash. Neighbors say one of the children came running out on fire screaming that his little brother was still inside, but by the time firefighters got to the scene, it was too late.

The small workshop was completely consumed by the fire, and the carport and the rear portion of the house along with the roof was heavily damaged by fire. The rest of the house had smoke damage. Damage was estimated at $75,000.

This is the fourth fire fatality this year in the city of Las Vegas.
