LAS VEGAS — Clark County Commissioner Lawrence Weekly will host a town hall meeting to discuss medical marijuana issues from 6 to 7:30 p.m. Wednesday, March 12, in Commission Chambers at the County Government Center, at 500 S. Grand Central Parkway in downtown Las Vegas.

“As my fellow commissioners and I consider how to best deal with medical marijuana businesses coming into our community, I feel it is important to give the public an extra opportunity to share their opinions and concerns on this topic,” Weekly said.

The County Commissioners are currently considering an ordinance that would establish rules and regulations for medical marijuana businesses in Clark County. The proposed ordinance was introduced Wednesday. The commissioners are expected to hold a public hearing and vote on the ordinance during their March 19 zoning board meeting. The commissioners could make changes to the proposed ordinance before its adoption.

Last year the Nevada Legislature adopted SB 374, which permits the sale, cultivation, manufacturing and testing of marijuana for medical use. State law already places limitations on the number of marijuana dispensaries that would be allowed and their locations. For example, dispensaries must be located in a commercial or industrial area but not near a school or park.

The proposed County ordinance includes additional requirements related to location and requires that all medical marijuana businesses receive special approval from the commissioners.

The proposed ordinance would establish four new medical marijuana business license categories in Clark County -- cultivation facilities, which would grow, deliver and sell marijuana to other medical marijuana establishments; production facilities that would produce edible marijuana products or marijuana-infused products such as topical ointments; independent testing laboratories that would test the content, quality and potency of the products; and dispensaries.
