LAS VEGAS (KSNV -- Clark County and city of Las Vegas officials will allow medical marijuana dispensaries.

A vote on regulations on dispensary locations was finalized Wednesday, opening the door for as many as 40 dispensaries to open up across southern Nevada.

Clark County and the city of Las Vegas approved ordinances to allow medical marijuana dispensaries within their limits.

Kathy Gillespie owns a successful printing company, but she's looking to get into the marijuana business.

“We're very pleased with their decision to move forward,” Gillespie said.

For Gillespie it's not just about business; it's also personal.

She lost her mother-in-law to cancer and says marijuana could have extended her life.

“You do not know what marijuana you are going to get when you go down that dark street or at that dark park at 10:30 at night and buying it,” Gillespie said.

Both of her parents were diagnosed with glaucoma, but she wasn't able to treat them with marijuana.

“Mom, I don't know how much to give you. I don't know how much to mix into a brownie or let you eat one bite or 10 bites or the whole brownie,” Gillespie said.

And even if she was able to get the drug, she couldn't be sure of the quality.

“If it's treated with a harmful herbicide or pesticide the cure could be worse than the disease,” Gillespie said.

If the city's regulations and requirements match up with those from the county, the building that houses her printing press business would be zoned for a dispensary and a grow house.

“If I have a medical marijuana plant in my hand growing come January of 2015, I'll be very happy,” Gillespie said.

It will still be a while where county residents will know where these new medical marijuana dispensaries will be. The county will start accepting applications April 16, and the city will be just a few months behind that.
