State receives 370 medical marijuana business applications

LAS VEGAS (KSNV -- Nevada state government received 370 applications from perspective marijuana business owners by the 5 p.m. deadline Monday.

The state had received 125 applications by the end of the day Friday, so another 145 applied the last day.

Seven teams of state workers are reviewing the applications. Among them are chemists, former law enforcement officers, pharmacists and building inspectors.

The teams rate everything from to safety to quality to inventory.

“We’re also looking at the layout of the facility, the construction, the labeling of the product, the laboratory analysis, of all of that,” says Chad Westom, bureau chief of the state medical marijuana program.

“The patients who need medical marijuana, they can be assured, that through this process that there medicine will be very appropriate to treat their needs and medical conditions.”

State law allows 66 medical marijuana dispensaries in Nevada. Of those, 40 are allocated for Clark County. Applicants need approval from the state and the local jurisdiction.
