(NBC News) An American citizen has been killed in Syria while fighting for the terror group ISIS.
He has been identified as Minnesota native Douglas McAuthur McCain, an example of the kind of homegrown jihadist most feared by the U.S. government.
Meanwhile, as U.S. air strikes are helping to push back ISIS advances in Iraq, the Pentagon is now preparing for the possibility of hitting ISIS where it lives, in Syria.
Under orders from President Obama the U.S. military is now flying surveillance missions over Syria to identify possible targets.
Addressing the American Legion in Charlotte Tuesday, President Obama had a message for the terrorists who executed American journalist James Foley.
"America does not forget. Our reach is long. We are patient. Justice will be done. We have proved time and time again we will do what's necessary to capture those who harm Americans," Mr. Obama said.
