Last minute preparations for running of the Boston Marathon

BOSTON (NBC News) -- An emotional week in Boston continued, as the community gathered to honor and remembers MIT police officer Sean Collier, who died trying to stop the alleged marathon bombers a year ago today.

As they remember, the city and officers are also preparing for this year's race.

MIT police officer Sean collier was ambushed by the alleged marathon bombers a year ago today, as his family and friends gathered on the campus this morning to remember and honor their hero.

"To all of Sean's family please know you will always have a place in our hearts and be members of our family. And to Sean, we'd like to say thank you for all the smiles and the laughs and the lessons learned," said Chief John Difava of the MIT Police.

Local and state police, along with federal agents are also looking ahead, to this year's marathon.
