CARSON CITY, Nev. (KSNV & MyNews3) -- If you frequent Phoenix or the state of Arizona, imagine a route that could get you there faster and with far less traffic.

Interstate 11 could be in Nevada’s future.

News 3's Mackenzie Warren was in Carson City to get an update at today's Nevada Department of Transportation meeting.

Before you can start building--NDOT has to talk about it.

For years to come, NDOT will be talking about interstate 11 at its headquarters in Carson City.

Much of the work now is about studying I-11 and proving to the federal government it's worth the time and money.

These early steps are about pooling resources with Arizona in the hopes of getting a better connection with Phoenix and Las Vegas.

If that works, Interstate 11 opens a whole new window of opportunity.

Nevada Governor Brian Sandoval who heads the NDOT board would like to see I-11 extend north to Canada and connect south to Mexico.

“We recently did a trade mission to Mexico. Mexico does a billion dollars a day in trade with us," Gov. Sandoval said. "It's very important to us to have that corridor in between Canada and Mexico. It puts Las Vegas at tenter point in terms of logistics and distribution, economic development. I'm very excited. It's a very important project for me and its a huge priority."
