CARSON CITY (AP) -- Nevada lawmakers are in scramble mode with the clock ticking toward a rapidly approaching deadline to pass a budget and take final action on an array of big issues like universal background checks on gun transfers and authorizing medical marijuana dispensaries.

SB522, the bill to fund K-12 education, was introduced in the Senate on Sunday and referred to the finance committee. A hearing was scheduled later in the day. The education bill must be passed before action can be taken on the other four budget measures that combined lay out funding for the next two years.

Bills dealing with NV Energy's plan to retire coal plants and creating a regulatory structure to allow marijuana dispensaries were approved by committees Sunday but await floor votes

Lawmakers must adjourn by midnight Monday.
