LAS VEGAS (AP) -- According to a new study, the economy is strengthening in Nevada, but the unemployment rate among Latinos still hasn't bounced back.

Researchers with Brookings Mountain West - a partnership between the University of Nevada, Las Vegas, and the Brookings Institute, a Washington D.C.-based think tank -- found that unemployment among Latinos surged during the recession and hasn't recovered.

The study found that the downturn in the construction and hospitality sectors left many Latino people out of work.

But while the state's economy has gradually recovered in the years since, the unemployment rate among Latinos has remained high.

The study found that between 2007 and 2010, the unemployment rate jumped from 6.5 percent to 18.6 percent. By 2012, the rate had fallen to 13.6 percent, but was still much higher than the state rate of 9.8 percent.
