CARSON CITY (KSNV MyNews3) -- Nearly another $10,000 has been added to the cost paid by Nevada taxpayers in the former Assemblyman Steven Brooks case, bringing the total to more than $100,000.

The $9,400 added to the tally came in a report on costs released today by Legislative Counsel Bureau Director Rick Combs. It includes travel costs incurred by legislative police officers to and from Las Vegas as well as protection for lawmakers who were allegedly threatened by Brooks.

Previously, the bill was pegged at $94,500 for legal and investigations in a review that led up to Brooks' expulsion from his District 17 Assembly seat in March.

Other costs, including overtime for legislative police reacting to Brooks' erratic behavior, cannot be calculated, Combs said.

Brooks was first arrested on Jan. 19 in Las Vegas on claims that he threatened Assembly Speaker Marilyn Kirkpatrick, D-North Las Vegas, over his committee assignments. After several outbreaks of erratic and violent behavior in following weeks, a Select Assembly Committee recommended his removal from office and the Assembly voted to do so in late March.

The following day, Brooks was arrested in California after a chase on Interstate 15. The Barstow Police Department and California Highway Patrol were involved.  Brooks was arrested on charges of resisting and evading arrest, throwing objects from his pick-up truck and harming a police dog.

Brooks remains in jail in San Bernardino County. His next court date is June 18.

Tyrone Thompson was appointed to the North Las Vegas seat for the remainder of the session, which is scheduled to end Monday at midnight.
