Terminally ill inmate dies in state prison

CARSON CITY, Nev. -- Inmate Cornelius Acres died at the Regional Medical Facility at the Northern Nevada Correctional Center on Tuesday, December 17.
Acres was a 60-year-old male serving a life sentence for attempted capital nurder in the State of Virginia

He has been incarcerated with the NDOC on this case since June 16, 1997, under the Interstate Corrections Compact Agreement. Virginia authorities have been notified.

He had been hospitalized for a terminal illness. The Carson City Coroner's office responded to the facility. An autopsy will be conducted.

As the inmate was terminally ill, the Department spoke to the inmate regarding end of life issues including next of kin. The inmate declared that he had no next of kin.

NDOC has been in contact with Virginia authorities regarding next of kin issues.
