LAS VEGAS (Antonio Castelan, KSNV -- The mastermind behind an alleged mortgage scheme is finally under arrest.

The local U.S. attorney general's office says Benjamin Rodriguez was on the run after he ripped off millions from the elderly and non-English speaking Hispanics.

"I'm glad he got caught. He deserves it. I think it is awful what he did," said mortgage scam victim Rose Loob.

Loob was one of 96 distressed homeowners who were tricked by Rodriguez.

Attorney general investigators searched several months for Rodriguez. He was dubbed elusive.

Finally detectives say a tip led U.S. marshals to an undisclosed location in the Las Vegas area.

Rodriguez found himself in handcuffs during the Labor Day weekend. Loob remembers confronting Rodriguez after news came out about his scam.

"We were shocked. Me and my son were watching TV. We heard it on the news and we went right down to the office and we told him and he said I don't know anything about it," Loob said.

Back in May, five others connected with Rodriguez were arrested and indicted on mortgage fraud. This indictment shows Rodriguez and his associates ran a company called Majestic Group and Nevada Sky Premier.

Documents reveal Rodriguez convinced victims to pay him their mortgage payments. Santiago Bahena ended up losing $16,000 and he almost lost his house.

"I feel bad. He was taking advantage of the elderly and Hispanics who were financially disadvantaged," Bahena said.

The attorney general's office says Rodriguez will no longer scam people. Loob is happy the man accused of the crimes will be following the laws he recited.

"He was a slick smooth talker and he looked like such a nice person, but everything he did, he quoted the Constitution," Loob said.
