Nieuwenhius, Montero lead 51s past Grizzlies in opener

LAS VEGAS (KSNV -- Kirk Nieuwenhius went 4-for-4 with a home run, leading a 13-hit attack that helped the Las Vegas 51s defeat the Fresno Grizzlies 9-2 Thursday night at Cashman Field; in the Pacific Coach League, the game was the opener for both teams, which drew 6,002 attendees.

Zach Lutz (2-for-4) hit a grand slam during a five-run seventh inning to break the game open for Las Vegas (1-0).

Right-hander Rafael Montero earned the victory, allowing just four hits in six shutout innings, striking out five.

Right-hander Noah Syndergaard, the New York Mets’ top prospect, is scheduled to pitch tonight for the 51s. Game time is 7:05 p.m., and a post-game fireworks show is scheduled.
