LAS VEGAS (KSNV & MyNews3) -- When it comes to intense temperatures, the job is even more critical looking after our senior citizens.

One group is taking on the extra task.

Meals on Wheels is delivering a lot of prepared food to seniors across the Las Vegas Valley. but during this heat wave, they're also checking on them to make sure they're staying cool.

Rashawn Ghoston considers his Meal on Wheels clients like family.
"You definitely don't have to go out in the heat," Ghoston tells Shelley Glass as he helps her stock her refrigerator.

He checks on Shelley and her husband Mitchell to see how they are taking care of themselves during this heat spell. They have their air conditioner running.

"I don't suppose anyone cares for 117 degrees whether they're 6 or 60. It just makes it harder when you're older to tolerate that kind of heat," Shelly Glass said.

"I don't want them to have heat stroke or dehydration because those are two main killers if you want to say of elderly," Ghoston said.

He says so far so good on his large route. His clients are keeping their air conditioners running cool enough to stay healthy.

"I'm sorry I think my health is more important than the bills. I just have to be comfortable. I don't think about the bills. I just pay it," said senior citizen Irene Singer.

And that's a relief to Rashawn Ghoston who tells them when he delivers not to drink a lot of soda and "stay hydrated 'cause the heat before you know it, you'll be dehydrated and it's not good for you especially when you're elderly, diabetes, high blood pressure, stuff like that."

Ghoston says if you have neighbors who are seniors or if you don't know your neighbors who are seniors now may be a good time to check on them.

Senior clients say these meals help them avoid trips outdoors, and if they do need to run errands they say they try to do it earlier in the morning to escape the sweltering heat.
