Boston, MA ( - The Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim received some bad news as the AL West pennant race starts to kick into gear.

An MRI taken Thursday on starting pitcher Garrett Richards revealed a torn patellar tendon in his left knee. Recovery time is expected to be anywhere from 6-to-9 months. According to the club, surgery is tentatively scheduled for next week.

Los Angeles subsequently placed Richards on the 60-day disabled list.

Richards departed Wednesday's 8-3 victory against the Red Sox in the bottom of the second inning.

Richards was running to cover first base on a ground ball hit by Boston's Brock Holt when his knee buckled underneath him and he fell to the dirt. He was motionless on the field for several minutes, attended by team medical staff, then was taken away on a stretcher.

He departed trailing 2-0. Cory Rasmus took the mound to continue the inning, and ended up recording the win.

Richards was enjoying a career year, having racked up a 13-4 record and 2.61 earned run average over 26 starts for the Halos, who enter play holding a 1 1/2-game lead over the slumping Oakland Athletics.

In other roster moves, the Angels selected the contract of pitcher Wade LeBlanc and recalled pitcher Cam Bedrosian from Triple-A Salt Lake.
