LAS VEGAS (KSNV — With all the options on the Strip, outlet centers and outdoor malls, are older, traditional malls keeping up?

The Boulevard Mall off Maryland Parkway and Desert Inn is working to stay relevant and keep shoppers coming in the door.

Late last year, the Mall – which opened in 1968 as Las Vegas' first indoor shopping center -- got a new owner, and there's a big push under way to move this mall into the future.

Signs of change are visible outside and inside the mall.

Boulevard Ventures LLC, the mall’s new owner, bought the center for $54 million in November. Sansone Companies, the new property manager, is working to tackle that challenge to make the stores more family friendly.

It hopes to pursue new tenants like a bowling alley, movie theater, miniature golf, restaurants and a large farmers’ market with playground space for the kids.

Another issue facing the Mall is recognizing the community's changing demographics. The road to revitalization could take the Mall in another direction.

About a mile south on Maryland Parkway, Robert Lang of UNLV'S Brookings Mountain West, sees light rail someday down Maryland Parkway.

It could be a game changer, Lang says, if there is political and financial will to make it happen.

“Maryland is one of the best corridors to switch to rail,” he said. “It hits every key user. It hits the airport, the state university, a big hospital, a downtown that's been revitalized.”
