VICTORVILLE, Calif. (KSNV — Former Nevada Assemblyman Steven Brooks was sentenced today after his March guilty plea to evading police and resisting arrest in San Bernardino County.

He received credit for 970 days served, including time for good behavior. Prosecutors say that means Brooks has completed his sentence in California so he could soon be extradited to Nevada for other pending charges.

Brooks appeared upbeat in the courtroom, smiling as he talked with his attorney before sentencing. He will also serve three to four years parole on the California charges and was ordered to pay $10,625 in restitution and court fees.

Paperwork indicated that Brooks will be extradited to Nevada to face other charges within the next few days.

San Bernardino County Deputy District Attorney Shannon Faherty said that on March 28, 2013, Brooks led police on a chase reaching 80 mph, and Brooks resisted arrest and harmed a police dog.

“I think our case is incredibly strong,” she said. “The entire thing is on video from the CHP cars and the Barstow police department videos.”

The sentencing was the latest chapter in Brooks' downward spiral that began weeks before he was kicked out of the Nevada Legislature in March 2013.

His troubles began Jan. 19, 2013, for alleged threats against Assembly Speaker Marilyn Kirkpatrick. A mental health evaluation followed, and Brooks was released from custody.

His attorney maintained it was all a misunderstanding, but a few weeks later Brooks had another run-in with police, this time a domestic dispute with his wife.

He was removed from office March 28, 2013, and hours later was arrested in Victorville over the confrontation with police.
