LAS VEGAS -- There are 38 students from Clark County District School listed amoung the 16,000 semifinalists in the 59th National Merit Scholarship program.

These academically talented high school seniors have an opportunity to continue in the competition for 8,000 National Merit Scholarships totaling approximately $35 million to be offered next spring.

To be considered for a National Merit Scholarship award, semifinalists must fulfill several requirements to advance to the finalist level of the competition.

About 90 percent of the semifinalists are expected to attain finalist standing, and more than half of the finalists will win a National Merit Scholarship, earning the Merit Scholar title.

Superintendent Pat Skorkowsky applauded the announcement and praised the students and the individuals who contributed to this major academic milestone.

“This year’s National Merit semifinalists represent some of our best and brightest in the Clark County School District,” Skorkowsky said.

Ed W. Clark High School has 14 semifinalists and tied for the most scholars in the State of Nevada.

“The fact that these students come from all over the district shows that academic excellence is not determined by zip code. These students, their families, teachers and administrators all have a lot to be proud of,” Skorkowsky said. “I thank all of the parents, teachers and other staff members involved in their success. It embodies the district’s mission that we reach every student in every classroom, without exceptions, without excuses.”
