LAS VEGAS (KSNV & MyNews3) -- A News3 viewer suggested we ask Gov. Brian Sandoval whether he would conduct an audit to support his argument that there is no disparity in state allocations for Southern and Northern Nevada, particularly in higher education, K-12 and transportation projects.

Sandoval’s response was succinct: “I don’t think we need an audit… we have a state budget… solutions putting the money where the needs are. There’s no conspiracy here.”

In recent days, News 3 has illustrated funding disparities that have benefitted Northern Nevada colleges and universities at the expense of UNLV and Nevada State College in Henderson.

The beneficiaries include the University of Nevada, Reno, and Western Nevada College in Carson City.

The late-Sen. Bill Raggio, R-Reno, a 38-year member of the state Senate, is credited with crafting much of the legislative strategy that benefitted Northern Nevada, but legislators and policymakers from both ends of the state say the dynamics of state funding have changed in recent years.

“The make-up of the Legislature has changed. We need to look forward,” said Nevada Higher Education Chancellor Dan Klaich. “I think there’s some very strong leadership (that’s) going to see Southern Nevada is treated fairly.”
