LAS VEGAS (KSNV -- A group of teens at Chaparral High School has figured out how to keep up with the demands of assignments and tests while being young parents.

This is the story of a program that helps these moms and dads succeed through high school and beyond. Instead of the 12 days of Christmas, it’s the 12 days of baby facts, a twist on the holiday season.

“I have a kid that is 6 months old now,” says Pablo Ibarra, 16. “I love him so much. It's hard having a kid, but I wouldn't give him up for the world. It's awesome.”

Ibarra is learning to balance being a father with work and school.

“I feel like my day is a daily routine,” he says. “I go to school. I wake up. I have to work. Sometimes I feel like I don't see my son that much. But I know it's what I have to do. I know it's my responsibility.”

The program, “When Baby’s First,” began in 2011 with nine students. This year about 35 young moms and dads meet twice a month for training.

“I try to provide them with the things they need: formula, diapers, job resources, information,” says Sara Garcia, who runs the program. “And all I ask is that they come to school and that they really focus on their grades. And they do.”

Anna Sylvia, a teen mom, says that without the help, “I would be struggling and I would be, like, really stressed. I think I would have white hair right now.”

It’s a shot many teens don’t get. These busy, young parents support each other. They map out the years ahead with their families while learning such things as healthy cooking.

"I feel like I'll see brighter days later in my future," Ibarra says.
