LAS VEGAS (KSNV & MyNews3) -- The chairman of Nevada Gaming Control board confirmed that the Clarion Hotel has filed closure plans with state gaming regulators.

After more than 30 years and a string of owners, the Clarion, which sits just west of the Las Vegas Convention Center, will close.

Balloonist Rob Cole recently performed his final gig at the Clarion, and said the current location is expected to be absorbed by the expanding convention center.

"I've been doing shows here for eight or nine years, but I did my final one last Friday," Cole said.

Callers are told there are no room bookings after Labor Day. The casino is down to just 20 slots and video-poker machines.

People who follow the history of the Las Vegas Strip may remember that in the 1970s, the Clarion was known as the Royal Inn. There were several other owners, including Debbie Reynolds who owned the property in the early 1990s, but it fell into bankruptcy.
