Congresswoman Dina Titus sent News 3 this statement on the meeting with the Iraq and Afghanistan Veterans of America regarding military suicides:

“Today I met with the Iraq and Afghanistan Veterans of America (IAVA) to discuss the critical importance of addressing and eliminating military suicide. I heard firsthand from new veterans about their transitions back into civilian life.

“A recent study done by the State of Nevada found that veterans in the Silver State commit suicide at a rate more than two and a half times higher than non-veterans and quadruple the national rate. The study further reported that female Nevada veterans committed suicide at more than triple the overall rate for females statewide and nearly six times the national rate for females.

“These statistics are staggering and we simply cannot allow this trend to continue. As Ranking Member of the House Veterans Affairs, Subcommittee on Disability Assistance, I am working every day to ensure that veterans receive all of the benefits they have earned, and the care they need. I recently joined in a bipartisan effort to request an additional $40 million for suicide prevention programs at DOD and the VA. Just as the military pledges to leave no soldier behind on the battlefield, we must promise that when he or she returns home, we will leave no veterans or their families behind.”
