LAS VEGAS (KSNV MyNews3) -- Ladies, a change in your health care routine is recommended. Experts now say you do not need a yearly pelvic exam, but the idea isn't sitting well with everyone.

The new guidelines from the American College of Physicians says most healthy women can skip the yearly ritual of a pelvic exam. Dr. Keith Brill, OB/GYN and past president of the Clark County Medical Society disagrees.

"The American College of Obstetricians and Gynocologists, which I am a member. I'm a board certified OB/GYN, does not agree with these recommendations," Brill said.

The guidelines says pelvic exams every year don't benefit women who are symptom-free from disease, and aren't pregnant. Dr. Brill says there are benefits to a pelvic exam.

"But there is a lot of other things that we do diagnose. We very often find causes of pelvic pain and discomfort. one of the most common findings we find on a pelvic examination is what's called a fibroid," Brill said.

He says the new guidelines make it just too simple.

"I think it's going to scare women away from seeing the doctor and I think preventive health is probably where most of healthcare is going these days and while we never want to overtreat or overdiagnose someone, a lot of what we provide as OB/GYNs is preventive health," Brill said.

Pelvic exams are usually part of a well woman visit where several things are checked; and for years, women have it done annually.

Dr. Brill says the best advice is for women to discuss what's right for them with their provider.
