LAS VEGAS (KSNV MyNews3.com) --
A man killed early Friday in a hit-and-run accident near East Lake Mead and Nellis Boulevard has been identified by the Clark County coroner.
Byron Pope, 50, died of multiple blunt force trauma due to a pedestrian versus motor vehicle collision about 1:30 a.m. at Meikle and Ringe lanes.
The coroner said the death was an accident. No residence was available for the victim.
Police are looking for the driver of a white van, perhaps a Ford Econoline, that was traveling eastbound on Meikle when it struck Pope.
A security guard who witnessed the accident said the van swerved and took a hard right going south on Ringe after hitting the victim. No plate number or description of the driver was available.
Pope was taken to UMC Trauma where he was pronounced dead.
The fatality was the 38th in Metro's jurisdiction this year.
Metro Sgt. Richard Strader said a moped hit-and-run happened in the same area about six months ago. That case has not been solved.
Strader says this area is dark with no street lights, making it very tough to see. Drivers and pedestrians should use extra caution. There are no crosswalks in the mostly residential area.
The collision remains under investigation by Metro's Accident Investigation Section. Anyone with information is urged to call (702) 828-4341 or, to remain anonymous, call Crime Stoppers at (702) 385-5555 or go to www.crimestoppersofnv.com.
