LAS VEGAS (KSNV -- The man killed Friday by law enforcement officers near Red Rock National Recreation Area has been identified.

D'Andre Berghardt Jr., 20, of Los Angeles was killed by multiple gunshot wounds, said the Clark County coroner's office.

The death has been ruled a homicide.

Berghardt was walking along State Route 159 (Charleston Boulevard) and had some sort of encounter with two bicyclists shortly before noon. They reported the event to the Visitor Center. Two Bureau of Land Management rangers and one Nevada Highway Patrol trooper went to talk to the man.

A struggle ensued and at least one of the officials shot and killed Berghardt.

The NHP confirmed today that the trooper involved has been placed on paid administrative leave. The BLM information officer has not returned inquiries about the status of the two rangers involved.

Metro is leading the investigation into the fatal shooting.
