LAS VEGAS -- A new driver authorization card would be available in January, and the DMV is busy preparing to provide.
Starting next year, people who want to apply to for a driver's authorization card can go to any DMV in Nevada, and it won't be much different than applying for a driver's license, except for just a couple of things.
“The driver authorization card will look just like a normal driver's license except instead of driver’s license it will say ‘driver authorization card’ and right about that it will say not valid for identification. And the law specifically states it can't be used for identification purposes or to apply for benefits,” said DMV public information officer Kevin Malone.
Miguel Barrientos has been actively following this issue for several years.
“You can't use it as identification. You can't get on an airplane as an official ID. It basically, all this is, it lets you legally drive in the state of Nevada, that's all it does, nothing else,” Barrientos said.
Those applying have to take the vision, written and driving skills tests.
“It's going to be very similar to applying for a normal driver’s license except that we'll take different documents. The documents that we'll accept on January 2nd that we'll accept that we don't accept now are an out of state driver's license, a foreign passport or foreign birth certificate or a Matricula Consular card,” Malone said.
The DMV will also need two other proofs of address such as a utility or credit card bill. And Miguel Barrientos says he expects town hall meetings to help spread the word so people know what to expect when they start applying.
