LAS VEGAS (KSNV & MyNews3) -- News 3 has been digging in to shocking numbers.

Thousands of potentially vital sexual assault kits backlogged in Clark County 4,000 kits untested and sitting in evidence.

Tonight in part three of this special report, News 3's John Treanor found out help could be on the way, but it is not that easy.

Federal dollars could be flowing to police agencies across the country if they ask for it and that is the key -- law enforcement has to make the first step.

Currently 4,000 sexual assault kits are sitting on the shelves of evidence lockers in Clark County.

These rape kits are critical pieces of evidence that are untested.
While there are several reasons that DNA was never processed, cases dropped, suspects pleaded guilty.

Victims are still angry that a backlog exists
