(NBC News) -- A dramatic manhunt ended in an even more dramatic high speed chase and shootout on the streets of Tampa, Florida Friday.

A man suspected in several violent home invasions and sexual assaults overnight, opened fire on police after they forced him off the road ending a high speed chase.

The hunt for the 24 year old suspect, Charlie Christopher Bates, began Thursday night after a crime spree near the campus of the University of South Florida.

"We found four males inside the apartment who had been bound and tied," said Hillsborough County Sheriff David Gee.

Four males at a party that was dramatically interrupted by a man who burst in fired a shot into the floor then ordered the men into a room while he sexually assaulted several of the women.

By daylight, the manhunt had still turned up nothing.

Area public schools were put on modified lockdown.

But with a good description of Bates' car police found him early Friday afternoon and after a brief high speed chase, ran him off the road.

In the hail of gunfire, bates was hit and died about an hour after the gun battle.

No one else was injured.
