LAS VEGAS (KSNV & MyNews3) -- There is a battle taking place between gaming regulators and the people they regulate who want to go into the medical marijuana industry.

The Nevada Gaming Commission says no to gaming executives branching out into medical marijuana. Clark County may follow their lead.

Gaming executives have until Wednesday to figure out whether they're going to try for licenses or withdraw their applications.

Clark County Commissioner Susan Brager says she doesn’t think the county should send any applications for state approval that include gaming executives.

In less than two weeks, commissioners have to whittle down 82 applications to just 18.

"I think that’s going to be very, very challenging. i think location will then play a big part in that. if three of them are excellent, but they’re meeting the need of only one area . . . two of them might get dropped off due to the fact that geographical factor that builds into this, that makes that difference," said Clark County Commissioner Susan Brager.

This is a potential mix-up in the process; there might be groups dropping out, groups re-submitting with revised applications, or new groups coming in to take vacated spots.

A flat out 'no' from gaming regulators has casino executives thinking twice about jumping into southern Nevada’s medical marijuana marketplace.

"The applicants are trying to overcome a hurdle now that’s been handed down," said Daniel Doherty, with Colliers International, a commercial real estate brokerage in Las Vegas. "There’re going to be many more hurdles to come and we’re just going to have to take them one by one."

Anyone who applied for a medical marijuana business license with Clark County has until Wednesday to change their application.
