Perthshire, Scotland (SportsNetwork.com) - Padraig Harrington, Jose Maria Olazabal and Miguel Angel Jimenez were named as vice-captains by European Ryder Cup captain Paul McGinley on Wednesday.
The trio will join Des Smyth and Sam Torrance to give the European squad a total of five vice-captains. Smyth and Torrance were announced in March.
"I am delighted to name Padraig, Miguel and Jose Maria as the men to join Des and Sam in completing my vice captaincy team for Gleneagles," said McGinley. "They will all bring valuable insight and experience to the players and the team room."
Harrington has played on six European Ryder Cup teams, but has never served as a vice-captain. He and McGinley are fellow Irishmen who attended school together as children.
Olazabal was the victorious European captain last time out in 2012. He played on seven European squads and vice-captained twice prior in 2008 and 2010.
Jimenez will be a vice-captain for the third time. He assisted the late Seve Ballesteros in 1997 at Valderrama, then helped Olazabal two years ago at Medinah.
McGinley rounded out his playing team on Tuesday with the additions of Ian Poulter, Lee Westwood and Stephen Gallacher.
The European team will go for a third consecutive victory at the Ryder Cup, starting Sept. 26 at Gleneagles. Two years ago at Medinah, the Europeans matched the largest comeback ever on Sunday when they trailed by four, but dominated the singles to get the win.
American captain Tom Watson's assistants will be Raymond Floyd, Andy North and Steve Stricker. Watson made his captain's picks as well on Tuesday, adding Keegan Bradley, Hunter Mahan and Webb Simpson to his roster.
