LAS VEGAS (KSNV -- A fire forces people to run, but for firefighters, they must head straight for the hot zone to protect life and property.

News 3 received a rare look at what it takes to put out the most extreme blazes and the advanced tools used to keep the community and its firefighters safe.

A scenario put together by Las Vegas Fire & Rescue replicates what firefighters deal with in the field – blinding smoke that not only obscures the path but makes breathing impossible for first responders. It is a dangerous and potentially deadly situation.

Las Vegas Fire & Rescue Public Education & Information Officer Tim Syzmanski says going in blind into this type of fire could be a disaster for firefighters. So they don't, going hi-tech instead.

A temperature-sensitive camera processes heat into an image.

Camera company ISG Infrasys has video showing what firefighters encounter -- flames licking a room; firefighters walking, crawling underneath flames that register more than 1,200 degrees.

Those are temperatures that would be deadly if a firefighter gets too close.

For that reason, Henderson Fire Department crews make sure the camera is part of every call they go on.
