LAS VEGAS (AP) — Volunteers, police and other workers have completed their annual nighttime count of the homeless population in southern Nevada.

The census began at about 1 a.m. Wednesday and wrapped up about 6 a.m.

More than 300 people fanned out across the Las Vegas area for the point-in-time count, which is required by the federal government and helps determine how much grant funding the area gets.

The coalition has logged a decline in the number of homeless people in Clark County since a similar count in January 2009 found more than 13,000 people on the streets.

Local officials say the January 2013 homeless census found 7,355 people on the streets.
