LAS VEGAS (KSNV -- One of several dozen Las Vegans running in Monday's Boston Marathon says the mood is great on the eve of the race.

Kathy Langin told News 3 this afternoon that there are more police than last year, but they are not an overpowering presence.

"We had police search all our bags as we went into the expo to get our race information and they have never done that before," Langin said. "I expect we will see more on Monday, but it hasn't been as many as I thought."

Last year's race was shattered with two explosions near the finish line that killed three people and wounded about 260. A four-day police manhunt found the alleged bombers.

Having finished the race, Langin was in women's changing tent when she heard the explosions.

"My husband was the first to tell me what had happened when I called him," Langin said. "He told us we had to get out of here."

Langin, a nurse who has run in eight times in Boston, said she's upbeat about Monday's race. She will start about 11 a.m. (8 a.m. Las Vegas time) in the third wave.

"It is much bigger than last year when I think there were about 22,000 runners," she said. "I've heard there are maybe 38,000 runners this year."

Because of its history and the crowd, the Boston Marathon is special, Langin said.

"The crowd just pulls you along the last six miles, the last three miles especially," she said. "If you start to walk they boo at you. They keep you running and pull you to the finish."

She said the run to the finish line is sacred ground.

"You can turn the final corner and see the finish line and where the bombing happened from quite a distance," she said. "It really is sacred ground in Boston and I'm sure that it will be very emotional."
