LAS VEGAS (KSNV MyNews3) -- Imagine doing your job and not getting paid, not even getting an explanation about why you were shorted. That's what some local doctors tell are telling News 3.

According to some OB/GYNs, Medicaid, the insurance program for the poor, has opted not to reimburse medical providers for pregnancy-related services.

It's a sight no business person wants to see -- a blank pay stub. Some local doctors say they began receiving them in the mail from Nevada's state Medicaid office in December. These valueless check receipts printed with the words: "This area is intentionally left blank."

Where did the money go? Doctors say that Medicaid is taking back money for pregnancy-related care given as far back as 2006. The surprising chain of events, doctors say, could cost their businesses tens -- even hundreds -- of thousands of dollars because simply stated they're not getting paid for the services they're providing.

Dr. George Chambers, a Las Vegas obstetrician and gynecologist, says he and his colleagues are concerned about what this means to their bottom line. Chambers says as a result, doctors who experience a major financial strain may have to stop seeing Medicaid patients, shut their doors or move out of state, which means there'd be fewer OB/GYNs to serve our community.

Chambers says the frustration is growing as he reads credits next to numbers that should be payments.

He is not alone. While his OB/GYN practice is in the southwest, News 3 has found other doctors in other parts of town facing the same billing nightmare, including Dr. Luis Lopez Benitez.

The doctors have called Medicaid for an explanation, but instead of reaching a live Medicaid representative, doctor’s offices are getting an automated recording.
