Man allegedly shot by roommate is identified by coroner

LAS VEGAS (KSNV -- A man allegedly shot to death by his roommate after an argument on Thursday has been identified by the Clark County coroner.

Tony Newberry, 48, of Las Vegas was identified Saturday as the victim of a homicide. The cause of death was a gunshot wound to the chest.

Metro investigators said patrol officers responded to a residence on North Eastern Avenue to investigate reports of a person who had been shot. Arriving police and medical personnel located a male in the roadway on Owens Avenue suffering from an apparent gunshot wound. The victim was pronounced dead at the scene.

The initial investigation by the Homicide Section revealed that the victim had had a verbal altercation with his roommate, who was later identified as Charles Redd Jr. of Las Vegas. Detectives believe the victim and Redd were walking in the area of Eastern Avenue and Owens Avenue, where the argument escalated and Redd shot the victim.

Prior to officers' arrival Redd fled the scene, but was later located and taken into custody. Redd has been booked at the Clark County Detention Center. He faces charges of murder with a deadly weapon and prohibited person in possession of a firearm.
