LAS VEGAS (KSNV -- A man lost his leg in a two-vehicle accident on U.S. 95 in downtown Las Vegas this morning. The drivers of both vehicles were being investigated for driving under the influence.

The accident occurred abut 7 a.m. as a car traveling north on U.S. 95 hit a wall. The passenger got out of the vehicle and was hit by a second car, said Nevada Highway Patrol Trooper Loy Hixson.

"A female driver hit him as he exited the vehicle," Hixson told News 3. "She stopped briefly then left the scene and a passenger got out. The driver then left. We located her a bit later and she was arrested for DUI as was the man driving the car that hit the wall."

The passenger was taken to UMC Trauma in critical condition. One leg was amputated when he was hit, Hixson said.

The freeway was closed until about 10 a.m., said NHP Trooper Chelsea Webster.

"We have had saturation patrols across the valley and DUI checkpoints on Friday and Saturday night that we publicized," Hixson said. "It seems as if we have to remind people daily that if you are going to drink, don't drive."
