LAS VEGAS (KSNV -- The man accused of biting off the lip of an ex-girlfriend will spend at least six years in prison.

Roberto Carlos Flores, 28, was found guilty of several felonies, including battery, mayhem for biting off Victoria Silva's lip and coercion.

During his sentencing he had a chance to repent.

“I would like to start off by taking full responsibility for my actions and for apologizing to the mother’s victim and the victim herself, Victoria Silva, for the hurt that I have caused, for the damage I have caused,” Flores said.

Flores' family sat in the audience. His sister Jessica told News 3 they will stand by his side and help him overcome his demons.

“It’s just been a hard life for him. I’m not excusing him for anything he’s ever done, but we do ask for pity,” Jessica Flores said.

Pity for crimes the prosecution says he committed again and again. In 2011, Flores was placed on parole after serving a year and a half in prison for biting off the lip of another woman.

He was arrested again last year for brutally attacking his girlfriend at the time.

Flores' Attorney Steven Lisk testified his client is now getting the mental health treatment he needs.

"Everyone wants to look at his actions and say Carlos is a monster," Lisk said.

Lisk told the judge that Flores is prepared to go to prison but asked for leniency.

Silva's mother, Laura Herrera, got the final word.

“My daughter is now living with the same trauma; she’s not the same,” Herrera said.

Herrera asked for the maximum sentence because the attack didn’t just harm her daughter.

“Life for us isn’t the same,” she said.

Herrera says their lives are forever changed. Her daughter wasn't in the audience because she still can't confront her attacker.

In the end, the judge sentenced Flores to serve a minimum of six years in prison while he continues treatment behind bars.

A sentence Herrera says is not enough but one they will have to live with.
